What is your favorite thing about a pet?

I have had many pets over the last 25 years. With having 4 children, they have each had a breed of animal that they loved. So due to this, I have owned dogs, cats, birds, fish, mice, rabbits, guinea pigs and chickens.

Each pet has left an imprint on me as they all have their own special personality.

I love the fact that one of my son’s has introduced me into the wonderful world of cats.

Being very much a dog lover all my life, the introduction of a cat into the household approximately 8 years ago showed me just how loving, quirky and entertaining cats are.

We still have quite a menagerie of pets, however, Sampson, our 15-year-old Maltese X, has a special place in my heart. He has always been there for myself and the family and now that he is in his twilight years, it’s our turn to be there for him.

Our two cats, Chip and Hiccup, are always a source of entertainment.

Why I became a vet, what do I enjoy most about my job:

For as long as I can remember, I have always loved animals, especially dogs – making up my own dog books, collecting dog toys, trinkets etc.

I also read all of the James Herriot books, so becoming a vet was always the path I thought I would pursue.

Being a Vet has brought both much joy, and sadness, into my life.

There are many things I love about being a vet, for example, it is incredibly rewarding by being able to work with clients, create a  relationship with them, and give their beloved pet the best quality of life possible.

I currently have a patient, a kelpie cross, whom I’ve been her primary Vet for nearly 3 years. She is very anxious when she comes to the vets. By working with her, after 2.5 years, she came up to me and allowed me to pat her for the very first time. To have gained her trust – you can’t ask for anything better !!

How to relax when not at work:

I have a wonderfully busy, full life. I like to spend time with my partner and my kids (I also have 3 stepchildren). There is never a dull moment in my house!!

When we do have time, I love getting out in my garden and doing baking.

My partner and I also love camping. Such a beautiful state we live in.

Share something weird/wonderful:

I have yet to succumb to the world of coffee!

Also, in regards to veterinary- I love a good abscess case to deal with. Some might think of nothing worse. However, to me, they are weirdly rewarding.
